Dear SPAZ members, supporters and friends…. A few weeks ago, a request appeared on Facebook asking for help for a dog shelter operated by a Glyfada Animal Welfare Group. They were requesting food as the group was running out of money to feed the dogs. SPAZ knew nothing about this shelter and since we are a group working in Glyfada, we decided to investigate. We visited the shelter (near Koropi) and met Mrs. Vasso, who single-handedly looks after the 48 dogs there, going out every day to feed and clean. She knows all the dogs by name and they obviously love her. However, she is over 60 and this is a very hard job for one person and she is worried about the future. The shelter is adequate if not ideal for the dogs. There is a covered area, dog houses and blankets for the animals. The dogs are all neutered, vaccinated and have their passport books. Some people did donate some food as a result of the Facebook plea but more is needed. Although this is considered a Glyfada dog shelter, the Demos has never contributed to its upkeep. It is clear that the shelter cannot be maintained and needs to be closed, which means the dogs need to be homed. Taking all this into consideration, SPAZ decided to take this on as a special project. We brought out a SPAZ vet and took blood samples from 10 dogs. We have neutered one dog and operated on another that had a bladder stone removed (and she may have also found a home). Now we are providing medicine for the few dogs that have been diagnosed with Kala-azar. We have arranged grooming for two poodles who badly need it, and this week Erli and Gorbi will be going to a kennel where they can be viewed by people interested in giving them a home. We are now asking for your help on this project as SPAZ financial resources are limited. What kind of help? Well, food is the first necessity. The shelter needs 10 bags of dry biscuits per week – 1 bag x 12Euros x 10 bags x 4 weeks = 480 Euros per month. Next, comes medicine. We are beginning treatment for the dogs diagnosed with Kala-azar. The therapy costs between 200-300 per dog. Can you contribute something towards this? Lastly, and most importantly, can you adopt a dog? Or do you know of a friend who could adopt a dog? Can you contribute something towards the cost of advertising for homes for these dogs (posters in particular). We know it will take time to home all the dogs and that it will not be easy, but we are going to take on this challenge because these dogs deserve it. We appreciate any help you can give us. Contact fofi_spaz@live.com for more information on how to help, or you can make a contribution on our website. If you do, please email us the details and what you wish the money to be used for. |
