SPAZ is a registered charity (Athens Court 773/1987) that operates in the southern suburbs ofAthens, based in Glyfada. It is run entirely by volunteers, led by a committee of five executive members, and 90% of the income is spent on neutering animals and providing emergency veterinary services. SPAZ concentrates on working as an effective local group, cooperating with local authorities, other animal welfare groups and citizens, in the common goal of stray animal population control. Since 1987, SPAZ has neutered more than 18,000 cats and dogs. The aim of SPAZ is to control the stray animal population by neutering and homing as many stray cats and dogs, as possible. We encourage responsible pet ownership; we have produced leaflets on a number of topics, and they are available free of charge. SPAZ is opposed to the use of animals in experiments, animals in zoos, circuses, animals in, animals kept in cages in bars, animals sold in pet shops, chained dogs, dogs constantly kept on balconies, inhumane transport of farm animals, inhumane practices in slaughter houses, inhumane treatment of farm animals, hunting, the use of all snares and traps which cause suffering, the use of poisons on animals, the abandonment of pets on the streets, the trade in wild animals, organized dog fights, dog races, bull fighting, farming of animals for their fur and cruelty to animals in general. We work on the street; we have no shelter and we are opposed to operating such a shelter; we have neither office nor any clinic. We focus on working in local neighbourhoods, providing resources to its members to enable them to help the animals in their area through private vets. Our income is generated from memberships, monthly car boot sales, donation boxes in various shops and a 2 day annual Christmas Bazaar. SPAZ has distributed thousands of brochures throughout the country to animal welfare groups and individuals on a number of topics (see our brochures page). We are dedicated to educating the new generation in Greece in responsible animal welfare, to working with other animal welfare groups on national issues, to add our voice to protests against cruelty towards animals and the banning of animal circuses in Greece. Our members are our strength. If you are a member of SPAZ you have probably neutered some animals. You should be proud. As of the end of 2008, we have neutered about 20,000 cats and dogs -- 1401 in 2008! We have done well. There is more work to do. The situation for stray animals in Greece has changed since we began in 1987 - but let’s face it, it is still far from good. |
